On a Serious Note: Wonders of the Cosmos

I’ve been pretty outspoken in the past about NOT being a fan of the various lockboxes we’ve seen for dimensions since the 2.3 patch where Rift went Free to Play and gameplay seemed to become more about RNG than about a lot of other things.  I’m not quite ready to eat all those words, but I may complain about the boxes a lot less going forward, particularly if they remain as they’ve been with the current patch.

Morticus had this to say about the Boxes of Cosmic Wonders:

Archonix wanted people to feel good when they open these, so yes you can get some really nice stuff out of them this way.

Finally, someone got it right.  Archonix, of course, is Game Director Chris Junior.

I opened quite a few of the old boxes, no matter how much I disliked them, because there were things in them I wanted.  It never failed, however, to frustrate and anger me because these boxes were filled with junk.  Snowy rocks, trees, granitewood snags, more rocks, prefab building blocks…the items I wanted were drowned beneath layers of crap I could well do without, and many others felt the same way.

If you’ve opened a single lockbox since the 3.3 patch went live on Wednesday/Thursday, chances are good you might have been impressed with what you got.

The first thing that struck me when I opened the first box was what I did NOT receive.  There wasn’t a single Building Block–prefab or otherwise–to be found.  Every item in the Box of Cosmic Wonders is a 3.3 dimension item.  The value, of course, varies, and I don’t really have an opinion either way about the corals and bright rocks.  I care very much that I’m receiving items that cost Lucky Coins, Void Stones, and that might require Notoriety levels my alts (especially on EU) don’t have.

The second thing I noticed was…Holy Sky Projectors!  Not just Sky Projectors that you can buy off the shop, or projectors that require Notoriety or Lucky Coins, I’m talking about projectors we had no clue were coming, such as those pictured here.  These projectors didn’t seem to be very rare drops, either, and I won’t lie:  I’ll be stockpiling the Coming Storm Sky Projector, shown at the very top. Of course, Sky Projectors aren’t all that are in these boxes, but they are very plentiful.

But what happened to the 2.7 mystery box items?  Granted, they were so rare that we’re still not really sure we even found all those items–due to the snowy rocks, prefab walls and trees mentioned above–but there were a few items it would be nice to have access to still.  The earlier boxes and their heaps of stuff were good before minions for those people who hadn’t built up piles of stuff.  After minions…well, very few had the space to put all that excess stuff.  But if those old boxes were revamped to be like the new boxes, perhaps my opinion about dimension lockboxes would change for good.

For now, however, I’m holding my breath, waiting for the nerf bat to hit.

Happy Building!
